NGCcoin.com Has Helpful Features for Gold Coin Enthusiasts

Posted on 4/8/2020

NGC offers several free and convenient online resources for buyers and sellers of gold coins.

Whether you are in the market to buy or sell gold, NGC has a wealth of free information on its website to help guide you.

Melt Value Calculator

Lower condition and very common gold coins trade based on their metal content. A dealer may say they are paying "5% over," meaning they are paying 105% of the melt price of a coin. Since physical gold is usually sold at a premium to its melt price, a collector might try to buy gold coins as close to melt as he or she can, paying the smallest premium possible.

NGC offers a melt value calculator for all US gold coins as well as select world gold coins. Displayed in a single table in this tool is the calculated melt value for all US gold coins. Another tab shows select world gold coins. The coin’s actual gold weight is displayed in troy ounces along with its melt value based on current spot prices for gold. The spot price used for calculation and time of last update are also shown.

This tool makes it very quick and easy for collectors to determine the base value of their gold coins.

World Gold Coins Value Guide

This unique resource shows the values for the most commonly collected gold coins from around the world. The World Gold Coins Value Guide includes British Sovereigns, Russian Roubles, Mexican Pesos and more!

For each coin, its actual gold weight and current melt value are displayed. The latter is shown as BV or “bullion value.” In lower grade, many of these coins trade simply based on the gold they contain. This tool, therefore, makes it very easy to determine their current market value.

In better condition, these coins are usually sold for a premium to their metal content. This value guide also displays average dealer retail asking prices for these coins in grades from NGC MS 63 to NGC MS 67. NGC Price Guide Editors scour the web and consult with dealers to update this chart every month. The last update date is shown. Price increases over the last month are displayed in green, decreases in red.

This handy one-page resource exists no place else!

Similarly, if you are selling a US coin, you will first want to establish its numismatic value. For instance, a 1920 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle in About Uncirculated condition sells for close to melt value. On the other hand, a 1921 example in a similar condition can sell for 25 to 50 times as much as the 1920 example.

The NGC US Coin Price Guide is updated regularly and shows average dealer retail prices based on actual, documented transactions and other information reported by collectors, dealers and auction houses for NGC-certified coins. The date of last update is shown for each coin.

Each coin in the NGC US Coin Price Guide is linked to its page in the NGC Coin Explorer, where you can see example high-resolution images, auction results and NGC Census population data.
