Peter Anthony: The 1991 5 kg. gold 10000 Yuan gold Panda is the largest, heaviest and most valuable Panda coin minted so far. It is the diameter of a salad plate but quite thick, which adds some dimensional stability to its soft gold contents. Only ten of these were struck. The highest price ever paid for a Panda at a public auction was for one of these: $1.5 million USD. For those who are curious, the coin’s melt value is approximately $200,000 USD.
These coins were struck to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Panda series. On one face there is a central circle that shows a Panda cub on a bamboo stalk. Arranged in a circle around this central area are the Panda designs of the first ten years of the series.
As of this writing none of this coin have been graded.
