Description & Analysis

With America's entry into World War II seemingly inevitable, the nation boosted defense production for both the domestic and export markets. The West Coast benefited greatly from this increased economic activity, and the San Francisco Mint nearly doubled its output of quarter dollars over 1940. At the time, all current issues were routinely saved by the BU roll. S-Mint coins received extra speculative interest, so the 1941-S quarter is common in grades through MS 66. Quality control issues have limited the number of higher-graded examples. Many 1941-S quarters were struck from worn dies having great luster but few details. When repolished to extend their useful life, such dies could become semi-prooflike, though often with distracting lines from the abrasives used. Only minor doubled-dies are known for this issue, and the real variety interest centers around the three different mintmark punches used. Most 1941-S quarters display the Small S typical for this mint 1917-41. A small percentage feature either one of two Large S punches employed that year, the first being the Trumpet-Tail S, and the second being a Serif S. These coins bring strong premiums when found in Mint State or About Uncirculated.

1941 S Washington Quarter Value

According to the NGC Price Guide, as of January 2025, a Washington Quarter from 1941 in circulated condition is worth between $8 and $27.50. However, on the open market 1941 S Quarters in pristine, uncirculated condition sell for as much as $10500.
