The NGC-graded rare coins and medals from continental Europe soared in a Künker sale in March 2022.

Nine gold coins and medals certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) sold for over $100,000 apiece in a Künker’s sale on March 22, 2022. These centuries-old rarities from Germany and elsewhere in continental Europe were part of the prominent Salton Collection.

The top NGC-certified piece in the auction was a Germany 1614 Teutonic Order 12 Ducats graded NGC MS 61 (lot 1551) that realized €252,000 (about $280,600) — several times its pre-auction estimate of €50,000 ($54,900). This religious-themed coin features Archduke Maximillian III, who held the highest office in the Teutonic Order, which still exists to this day. Encapsulated in NGC’s Oversize Holder, this extremely rare coin is the only example certified in the NGC Census.
