About Elizabeth Jones

Elizabeth Jones was the first and only woman to hold the prestigious position of US Mint Chief Engraver. She served from 1981 to 1990, during which time some of the most important US modern coins were designed and released.

An accomplished sculptor and engraver, Elizabeth Jones studied at Vassar College, the Art Students League of New York and the Scuola dell’Arte della Medaglia of the Italian Mint. She received international acclaim early in her career for her portrait medallions, and in 1972 Jones was awarded the Numismatic Art Award for Excellence in Medallic Sculpture by the American Numismatic Association. Her medals and medallions have been exhibited by Tiffany and Company, the Fédération Internationale de la Médaille d’Art (FIDEM) and others.

During her time at the US Mint, Jones directed the introduction of the American Silver and Gold Eagles, as well as the resumption of the US Commemorative Coin Series after its nearly 30-year hiatus. Her tenure has had a lasting impact on collectors of modern coins and medals.

• American Silver Eagles: Launched under the supervision of Elizabeth Jones during her tenure as US Mint Chief Engraver.
• American Gold Eagles: Introduction overseen by Elizabeth Jones.
• 1982 George Washington Silver Half Dollars: Designed by Elizabeth Jones, these coins started the US Modern Commemorative Series. Winner of Krause Publications’ Coin of the Year Award in the categories of Most Historically Significant Coin and Most Popular Coin.
• 1983 Los Angeles Summer Olympics Discus Thrower Silver Dollars: Designed by Elizabeth Jones. Winner of Krause Publications’ Coin of the Year Award in the categories of Best Crown Coin and Most Popular Coin.
• 1986-W Statue of Liberty Gold Five Dollars: Designed by Elizabeth Jones, this was the first five-dollar gold piece to be minted by the United States since 1929. Winner of Krause Publications’ Coin of the Year Award in the category of Most Popular Coin.
• 1988-W Seoul Summer Olympics Gold Five Dollars: Designed by Elizabeth Jones.
