Two Stunning Canada Gold Error Coins Offered by Heritage Auctions
Posted on 12/13/2022
Two Canada gold coins with fascinating mint errors that are certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) are being offered by Heritage Auctions. Online bidding begins in mid-December for the NYINC World & Ancient Coins Platinum Session and Signature Auction, which will be held January 9, 2023.
One of the coins is a Canada 1985 Gold 100 Dollars graded NGC Mint Error PF 68 Ultra Cameo that was Double Struck with Reverse Brockage (lot 32154). The obverse of the coin was double-struck, once with the expected design that includes Queen Elizabeth II, whose image graced Canadian currency for decades. Another strike occurred after a separate coin with the same bighorn ram design came between this one and the die. As a result, that strike left a mirror image of the ram and the lettering near the edge of the coin, including the year, denomination and the phrase NATIONAL PARKS and its French-Canadian equivalent.

The auction includes a second Canada 1985 Gold 100 Dollars, this one graded NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo with a Multi-Struck error (lot 32153). The coin was struck multiple times, causing its dramatically unexpected appearance. The obverse shows only a sliver of the intended design, including the words REGINA and CANADA. As for the reverse, the bighorn ram design is faint but recognizable.
Errors involving Proof coinage struck in gold or other precious metals are rare. These two coins have estimates of $10,000 to $12,000 and $10,000 to $15,000 respectively.
