NGC-certified Morgan Dollar Fetches $372,000 in Heritage Sale
Posted on 2/20/2023
A key-date Morgan Dollar certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) was sold for six figures in Heritage Auctions’ Long Beach Expo U.S. Signature Coins Auction on February 12, 2023.
The most expensive NGC-certified coin in this auction was an 1893-S Morgan Dollar graded NGC MS 64 (lot 3774) that realized $372,000. 1893-S Morgan Dollars were desperately needed for circulation in its era, which contributed to the paucity of Mint State examples today. While NGC has certified over 3,600 examples, fewer than 30 of those are numerically graded in Mint State.
Other top-selling NGC-certified coins in this auction were:
- an 1823 Half Dollar graded NGC MS 67 (lot 3743) that realized $102,000
- an 1865 $3 graded NGC MS 66★ (lot 3800) that realized $99,000
- an 1892-S Morgan Dollar graded NGC MS 63 (lot 3771) that realized $90,000
