NGC-certified Gold Pattern in the Spotlight in Next SINCONA British Collection Sale

Posted on 5/1/2023

The rarity is expected to sell for well into the six figures as more than 500 NGC-certified coins are offered in the May auction.

A gold pattern that is among the greatest rarities in British numismatics is among over 500 coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) that are being offered in an upcoming SINCONA auction. Bidding is already underway for the group of coins that represents Part 4 of the phenomenal SINCONA British Collection, which is being offered May 15, 2023.

The top coin in the auction is a Great Britain 1820 Gold Pattern 5 Sovereign graded NGC PF 64★ Ultra Cameo (lot 1843). The obverse of the coin shows King George III, who passed away after a 60-year reign just before the coin was minted. The reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic design of St. George slaying the dragon. Only 25 examples of this coin are believed to have been struck, and this example is the finest in the NGC Census. It is likely to realize a price substantially higher than its starting bid of 150,000 CHF (about $168,000).

The auction also features another great rarity: a Great Britain 1731 5 Guineas graded NGC PF 62 Cameo (lot 1743). With George II on the obverse, the coin is an example of one of Great Britain's earliest Proof coins. One of only two in the NGC Census, this coin has a starting price of 50,000 CHF (about $56,000).

To enhance these stunning coins, NGC encapsulated them with a special label that combines the British flag and the Matterhorn, a Swiss mountain that represents the highest level of achievement. To date, 35 coins from the SINCONA British Collection have realized prices over $100,000 in auctions that started in November 2021. One additional sale is planned for October 2023.

The SINCONA British Collection includes three examples of the 1839 Una and the Lion 5 Sovereign, generally regarded as Great Britain's most beautiful coin. SINCONA is offering another Una and the Lion (not part of this collection) as part of Auction 83, which is being held May 15-17, 2023.
