NGC-certified Hong Kong Rarities Among Stars in Heritage Sale
Posted on 7/7/2023
Coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) representing some of the greatest rarities in Hong Kong numismatics sold for a towering six figures each in a recent Heritage Auctions sale. The World Coins Platinum Session and Signature Auction was held June 21-23, 2023.
Among the coins in the auction was a Hong Kong 1868 Victorian Dollar graded NGC MS 64 (lot 30158) that realized $312,000. The Hong Kong Mint operated from 1866 to 1868 in the British colony before closing, with the mint equipment sold to Japan. Among the limited number of surviving coins from the Hong Kong mint, most are either circulated or impaired. Mint State examples are scarce, with only a small fraction in existence.
Also in this auction was a Hong Kong 1866 Plain Edge Silver Dollar graded NGC PF 65 Cameo (lot 30153) that realized $216,000. This particular Proof Victoria Dollar, which features a plain edge and coin alignment, is one of the few exceptionally attractive examples to be offered in recent years. It is unsurpassed in the NGC Census for both edge varieties.
Meanwhile, a Hong Kong 1865 Plain Edge Silver Pattern Dollar graded NGC PF 65 (lot 30152) realized $240,000. This particular specimen belongs to a series of patterns that were struck at the Royal Mint one year before the official currency issues bearing the same design were produced at the Hong Kong branch starting in 1866. The extreme rarity of this offering is reflected by the fact that it is the only example in the NGC Census.
Also in this sale was an NGC-certified Hong Kong 1866 five-piece Proof Set (lot 30159), which realized $43,200. It included a Reeded Edge Dollar graded NGC PF 61, a Reeded Edge 50 Cents graded NGC Proof Details, a Reeded Edge 20 Cents graded NGC Proof Details, an 11 Pearls 10 Cents graded NGC Proof Details and Reeded Edge 5 Cents graded NGC Proof Details.
