NGC Registry Featured Set: Britannia Silver £2

With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the recent coronation of King Charles III, a whole new era in coin collecting is upon us. The profile of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest living monarch to date, has dominated coins all over the United Kingdom since her reign began in 1952. A historic collection of NGC-certified British coins was just auctioned by Stack’s Bowers for The Royal Mint; this auction pulled in an impressive figure, more than $5 million, highlighted here. Among those coins was the popular Silver £2 Britannia coin. This month, we feature the #1 ranked Britannia Silver £2 Mint State variety set, by Birdy Collections, found here.

With over 10,200 registered sets in the United Kingdom section of the NGC Registry, the Britannia category is the most popular of all UK set types, boasting 999 participating sets! Within the Britannia section, the Silver £2 set is the hands-down favorite, with 467 sets to date. Birdy Collections currently sits at the top of the pack with the majority of their coins being Top Pop, like this 2001 NGC MS 70 DPL, below, population one of one.

Birdy Collections started assembling this collection of stunning Britannias back in 2016, which now boasts over 16,500 points in first place, with posted images for all coins. However, several other competitors are hot on Birdy’s heels, in the 90-100% completion range, which means the first-place 2023 Registry award for this set is still up for grabs. In second place, for example, is Bick62, who is less than 100 points behind. Bick62 also has several Top Pop coins, such as this 2023 King Charles III obverse, below.
