European Gold Rarities Among Historic NGC-certified Coins in Gadoury Auction

Posted on 9/27/2023

The October 2023 auction features ancient and vintage coins, including a seldom-seen denomination from Italy.

Vintage gold rarities from Europe are among hundreds of historic coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) that are being offered in an upcoming sale. Pre-bidding is already underway for the Gadoury Monaco auction, which will be held October 14, 2023.

The top lot in the sale is an Italy 1633 Savoy 10 Scudi d'Oro graded NGC AU 53 (lot 623) with a starting price of €180,000 (about $191,900). The gold coin features the bust of Victor Amadeus I in formal attire on the front. Also known as the Lion of Susa, he was the Duke of Savoy from 1630 to 1637, and was succeeded by two of his sons. The reverse features the crowned Savoy coat of arms. This is the lone example of this rarity in the NGC Census.
