Gold Penny and Petition Crown Among NGC-certified Rarities in Heritage NYINC Auction
Posted on 12/12/2023
A Gold Penny and a Petition Crown are among hundreds of elite coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) being offered in an upcoming Heritage Auction sale. The NYINC Platinum Session World & Ancient Coins Signature Auction on January 8, 2024, is one of the highlights of the numismatic calendar.
In the spotlight is an England 1257 Gold Penny of Henry III graded NGC UNC Details (lot 31139). One of the most remarkable things Henry III did during his 56-year reign as king was attempt to introduce a gold currency. The experiment was unsuccessful and most of the Gold Pennies were melted down. Today, their history and rarity make this one of the most desirable coins in English numismatics. One of only two examples in the NGC Census, it has a pre-auction estimate of $250,000 to $500,000.
Another highlight of the auction is an England 1663 Petition Crown graded NGC MS 62 (lot 31155), which has an estimate of $400,000 to $500,000. Fewer than 20 examples of the Petition Crown are believed to exist, and seven are held in museums and other institutions. The coins were created by renowned engraver Thomas Simon in a petition to King Charles II to appoint him as Chief Engraver. The petition was unsuccessful, but their masterful work establishes these coins among the most celebrated in history. This is the second-highest graded of only three examples in the NGC Census.
