NGC Designations and Labels for 2024 Greatest Generation Coins
Posted on 2/13/2024
On February 29, 2024, the US Mint is opening pre-orders for its newest commemorative coins: the Greatest Generation 2024 Three-Coin Proof Set. The special set celebrates the National World War II Memorial and the sacrifices of American soldiers and civilians during World War II with a trio of coins, including a Gold Five Dollars, a Silver Dollar and a Half Dollar. To capture the excitement of these coins, which are expected to ship on April 5, 2024, Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) has several labels and designations available upon request, including a special designation — Greatest Generation Proof Set.
The three-coin set has a household order limit of 1 and a product limit of only 5,000. The Greatest Generation coins can also be purchased individually, in Proof and Uncirculated formats. The Gold Five Dollars has a product limit of 50,000, the Silver Dollar has a product limit of 400,000 and the Half Dollar has a product limit of 750,000. The Greatest Generation Proof Set must be submitted in the sealed original Mint shipping box to receive the set designation.
The Greatest Generation, also known as the World War II Generation, refers to Americans who were born in the early 1900s and who made up the majority of the enlisted armed forces during World War II. The new coin program commemorates the service and sacrifice of these American soldiers and civilians while also honoring the National World War II Memorial.
Each of the three coins in the series pays tribute to the Greatest Generation. The Half Dollar re-imagines the Victory Medal, which was awarded to everyone who served in World War II. The Silver Dollar design shows six symbolic figures coming together to support the Earth, which represents the involvement of the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Navy, Marine Corps and the Merchant Marine during World War II. The Gold Five Dollars features a depiction of the Wall of Stars at the World War II Memorial, with each star representing an American who lost their life fighting in the war.
In addition, each purchase of a coin in the Greatest Generation program will include a donation by the US Mint. A surcharge will be paid by the US Mint to the Friends of the National World War II Memorial organization, which is "dedicated to teaching the lessons of yesterday to unite the generations of tomorrow." For each coin sold, amounts of $35 (gold), $10 (silver) or $5 (clad) will be allocated to furthering the organization's mission of providing "educational programs centered around the themes of unity, shared values and ideals, and the spirit of community."
The set also features designs that were created by multiple artists who sign certification labels exclusively for NGC. The Half Dollar reverse features a depiction of the World War II Memorial from the point of view of a visitor walking up a ramp to one of the memorial towers. The reverse design was created by award-winning illustrator Matt Swaim. Artist and illustrator Beth Zaiken created the obverse design of the Silver Dollar. The design features six symbolic figures of the military uniting to fight for freedom across the globe during World War II.
Meanwhile, artist and illustrator Benjamin Sowards created the reverse designs for both the Silver Dollar and Gold Five Dollars. The Silver Dollar's reverse design shows four eagles holding a laurel wreath containing a globe within it, which was inspired by a Baldacchino sculptural canopy inside the Victory Pavilion in the World War II Memorial. The reverse design of the Gold Five Dollars features a folded American flag, which is presented to the loved ones of a fallen service member at their funeral.
