Posted on 7/12/2024

The Heritage Auctions sale in mid-August has several US coins graded by NGC expected to realize six figures.

More than a thousand vintage American coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®), including some expected to realize six figures, are featured in an upcoming sale. Bidding for Heritage Auctions’ ANA US Coins Signature Auction opens in late July and will close August 13-18, 2024.

Among the auction’s top highlights is an 1870-CC Double Eagle graded NGC XF 45. The 1870-CC Liberty Double Eagle, struck at the Carson City Mint, holds a legendary status among numismatists. Only a few dozen are known, and none of those are in Mint State grades. The NGC Census records 37 examples, with only a dozen graded higher than this one.

Another exciting offering is a 1794 Head of 94 Cent - S-28 variety with a Double Struck Error graded NGC Mint Error MS 66 BN. One of the earliest examples of any error coin struck by the US Mint, this coin was struck twice, and both strikes are off-center. In addition, it is one of the finest-graded S-28 varieties of the 1794 Cent.

Four other examples of 1794 Cents, all pedigreed to the Robert A. Schuman Collection, are offered in this auction, including:

Also offered is an 1851 Humbert 887 Reeded $50 graded NGC MS 63. The United States Assay Office in San Francisco, authorized by Congress in 1850 amid the California Gold Rush, was led by Augustus Humbert as United States Assayer. It issued octagonal $50 ingots in 1851 and 1852, which were accepted for customs duties and widely used in large transactions by banks and merchants. Only a few dozen examples of the rare K-6 variety are thought to exist, and none is graded higher than this one.

Other NGC-certified highlights in this auction include:
