NGC Registry Featured Set: Silver DC Comics

Summer months typically bring vacations, relaxation and simple things, like additional visits to the local movie theaters, bookshops and coin shows. What is different about summer 2024? It is the summer of the 85th anniversary of the iconic Batman character! Fans of all ages are celebrating the anniversary of this iconic character, as announced in March by DC Comics.

With this announcement comes new specialty merchandise, including coins, commemorating the beloved caped crusader. This month, we feature an outstanding NGC Registry set — a Niue DC Comics set by Dan Hughes, found here.

This set is a unique amalgamation of different characters featuring many different DC Comics favorites, such as The Joker, The Flash, Wonder Woman and, of course, Batman. Batman first appeared in 1939 in the comic book, Detective Comics #27. Check out the 2023 Niue Silver $2 coin above. It is one of Dan’s countless NGC Top Pop coins, and this piece features that very same Detective Comics issue #27.

Dan is well-known in the NGC Registry; he boasts over 500 high-ranking competitive sets, and he started this particular set back in 2022. Surging past 40 other Niue DC Comics set competitors, Dan currently sits in first place with over 72,000 points. His set completion as of now is 77%. That may not sound like a high figure initially, but upon a closer look, one can see this involves 112 coins! To reach full completion, one needs 144 coins, and this set is continually growing.

One recent addition was just mentioned in an article by Coin World. It is a 2024 Uncirculated 1 ounce Silver 2 Dollar coin. What is unique about this coin is that it is shaped like a bat and is designed like the logo from the Batman television show of the ’60s, which starred Adam West and Burt Ward. We already have perfect NGC MS 70 examples. They are a great addition to this eclectic set type.
