Dozens of NGC-certified Coins Could Realize Six Figures in September Bruun Collection Auction
Posted on 8/13/2024
A jaw-dropping group of rare Scandinavian coins that are graded by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) are being presented in an upcoming auction. More than 30 coins are expected to realize prices over $100,000 as Stack's Bowers Galleries presents The L.E. Bruun Collection - A Corpus of Scandinavian Monetary History Part I, which will be held September 14, 2014. Bidding is already underway.
The top lot in the auction is the Norway (1661) 2 Speciedaler graded NGC AU 58 (lot 1217), which has an estimate of €500,000 to €750,000 (about $550,000 to $825,000). This silver coin celebrates Norway's vow of allegiance to the king of Denmark, which was made at Akershus, a fortress in Oslo depicted on the reverse of the coin. This coin is believed to be unique in private hands.
Another top highlight of the collection is the Denmark 1496 Noble graded NGC AU 55 (lot 1001). This is the first gold coin struck by Denmark and the first dated coin from the Danish Kingdom, and it is also unique in private hands, according to Stack's Bowers Galleries. It has an estimate of €300,000 to €600,000 (about $330,000 to $660,000).
Lars Emil Bruun, a Danish entrepreneur who made his fortune in butter and real estate, amassed a collection of 20,000 pieces from Denmark and other Scandinavian countries. He ordered his amazing collection to be set aside for 100 years after his death to serve as a replacement for the one owned by the Danish government, in case it was lost or destroyed. Now that a century has passed, the collection is being presented in a series of auctions, with the proceeds benefitting his heirs.
