Rare Mormon $20 Gold Coin to Realize Six Figures in GreatCollections Auction

Posted on 8/27/2024

The lot is among the NGC-certified rarities up for bid in early September.

A privately issued 19th century gold coin is among the US rarities certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) that are currently being offered by GreatCollections.

More than a week before the lot was set to close, bidding had already surpassed $100,000 for an 1849 Mormon $20 graded NGC XF 40 (lot 1637858). Using metal brought by miners from the Gold Rush, coins were struck in several denominations by early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City. The $20 coins, which exist only with an 1849 date, made it into circulation months before their federal counterparts, but the Mormon money fell out of favor and much of it was melted. Just seven examples of the $20 are listed in the NGC Census.
