Posted on 9/17/2024

Further selections from the Kian Collection are available in an October auction, including some of the finest vintage Iranian coins and medals.

A vintage coin struck at the heyday of an empire during the Islamic Golden Age is among the treasures offered in SINCONA Auction 92. The auction on October 21, 2024, features Islamic and Persian coins and medals from the Kian Collection certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®).

Among the gems of this auction is a Buwayhid (AH341-372) 5 Dinars graded NGC MS 62 (lot 14), which has a starting price of 200,000 CHF (about $234,000). It was issued during the reign of Adud al-Dawla at the height of the power of the Buwayhid Dynasty, which controlled much of modern-day Iran and Iraq in the late 10th century. The design includes a creed and prayer and is likely a donative coin.

Also offered is an  (AH596-617) Muhammad 10 Dinar graded NGC MS 64 (lot 17), with a starting price of 100,000 CHF (about $117,000). It was struck in the early 13th century under Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad at the height of the Ghurid Dynasty, when it stretched from eastern Iran to northern India. The empire was centered on modern-day Afghanistan and included Ghazna, a major city that hosted a treasury. Coins like these would have funded the war against the Mongols, a rising power who wiped out Ghazna a short time later.
