NGC-certified Ancient Roman Coin Expected to Realize Six Figures in Spink Sale

Posted on 9/17/2024

The coin commemorating Roman military success in Judaea is among the ancient and world coins offered in the September 26 auction.

A gold coin issued by Roman Emperor Vespasian is among several rarities certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) expected to sell for more than $100,000 in an upcoming auction. These coins and nearly 300 others certified by NGC are being offered to collectors in Spink’s Official Coinex Auction of Ancient, British and World Coins on September 26, 2024.

One of the top lots in the sale is a Roman Empire, Vespasian (A.D. 69-79) Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients XF, Strike 5/5, Surface 2/5 (lot 254), with an estimate of £80,000 to £120,000 (about $106,000 to $159,000). Among the earliest examples of the 'Judaea Capta' series, this Aureus was issued by Vespasian, who led the siege against Jerusalem in the First Jewish-Roman War, which ultimately resulted in the city’s destruction. In A.D. 69, he emerged as emperor after his four predecessors were killed or died by suicide in the previous 18 months. Vespasian leveraged the Roman victory in Judaea, which was led by him and his son Titus, to establish a new imperial dynasty.

Another top lot is an England 1701 5 Guineas - Ornamental Sceptres graded NGC AU 58 (lot 421), with an estimate of £90,000 to £120,000 (about $119,000 to $159,000). These coins were issued near the end of the reign of King William III, and the Ornamental Sceptres variety is believed to be considerably rarer than the standard issue.

Another significant coin is a Poland 1618 Lithuania 10 Ducats graded NGC AU 55 (lot 673), with an estimate of £80,000 to £120,000 (about $106,000 to $159,000). The coin shows King Sigismund III Vasa, who ruled as King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1587 to 1632. The year this coin was issued saw the Truce of Deulino, in which Russia agreed to cede territory, including the city of Smolensk, to Poland to end a war. This brought the Poland-Lithuania Commonwealth to its greatest territorial extent.
