A top lot in this auction is a Spain 1714S M 8 Escudos graded NGC MS 65 (lot 1429), with an estimate of $50,000 to $100,000. It dates from early in the rule of King Philip V, who reigned from 1700 to 1746, except for a seven-month period in 1724 that was bookended by his abdication and the death of his successor from smallpox. This coin easily has the highest grade among seven examples in the NGC Census, thanks to its remarkable preservation and because it was likely struck from fresh dies. In fact, among all Spanish 8 Escudos graded by NGC spanning the 1600s to the 1800s, this coin ranks near the very top.

Other NGC-certified coins in this auction include:

  • a Peru 1698C M Escudo graded NGC AU 58 and pedigreed to the 1714 Fleet (lot 311), with an estimate of $30,000 to $60,000
