NGC-certified Japanese Rarity Showcased in Ginza Coins Auction

Posted on 11/8/2024

The vintage Japanese gold coin could realize six figures in the mid-November sale.

A seldom-seen gold Japanese coin from the 19th century is among more than 200 vintage world and ancient coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) that are being offered in an ongoing sale. Online bidding is already underway for the 36th Ginza Coin Auction, which is being held on November 16, 2024.

The top NGC-certified highlight of the auction is a Japan M7(1874) 2 Yen graded NGC PF 66 (lot 611), with a starting price of ¥12,000,000 (about $79,000). Minted not long after Japan moved into a period of rapid modernization in the 19th century, this extremely rare Proof gold coin was specially produced as a presentation piece. Due to its rarity, intricate dragon and overall attractive design, it is one of the most sought-after coins in Japanese numismatics. It is the only example of its issue in the NGC Census.
