Numismatica Genevensis Offers Unprecedented 5 Guineas Collection Certified by NGC

Posted on 11/12/2024

Several of the English rarities are expected to sell for six figures in an auction featuring the first set to bring together all 49 dates of 5 Guineas.

An unparalleled collection of 5 Guinea coins that are certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) are being offered in an upcoming auction. Among the 58 coins are some of the greatest rarities in English numismatics, with several likely to realize six-figure prices in Numismatica Genevensis SA's Auction 21 on December 10, 2024.

The top lot is a Great Britain 1777 Gold Pattern 5 Guineas graded NGC PF 64 Cameo (lot 2058), with a starting price of CHF300,000 (about $343,000). This coin showing the bust of King George III was the last 5 Guinea in the series' run of just over a century as England's highest denomination coin. It exists only as a pattern, which is a proposed design for a coin, and this is the only gold example in the NGC Census.

Pedigreed to The Royal Gold Set, this group of 58 NGC-certified coins includes all 49 dates of the 5 Guinea denomination, including three patterns struck in the 1770s. Another of these patterns is a Great Britain 1770 5 Guineas graded NGC PF 62 (lot 2056), with a starting price of CHF200,000 (about $229,000). Only two of these coins, which also show George III, are listed in the NGC Census.

The set also includes an England 1703 VIGO 5 Guineas graded NGC UNC Details (lot 2035), with a starting price of CHF150,000 (about $172,000). In 1702, a British and Dutch fleet captured and sunk French and Spanish ships at the Battle of Vigo Bay. The spoils included several thousand pounds of silver in addition to a mere 7½ pounds of gold, which was used to strike coins bearing the word VIGO that rank among the rarest in British numismatics. The NGC Census contains only five examples of this coin.
