CNG Offers Egyptian Rarity and Other World and Ancient Coins Certified by NGC

Posted on 12/20/2024

A coin from the last native pharaoh of Egypt, which is certified by NGC Ancients, is among the top highlights in the January auction.

A gold coin issued by the last native pharaoh of Egypt leads a group of highly collectible ancient and world coins spanning more than 2,000 years, which are all certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC), in an ongoing auction. Bidding is already underway for Classical Numismatic Group’s Triton XXVIII Auction, which will be held on January 15, 2025.

A top highlight of the auction is a Pharaonic Egypt Nectanebo II c.361-343 BC Gold Stater graded NGC Ancients XF★, 3/5 Strike and 5/5 Surface (lot 387), which has an estimate of $100,000. Nectanebo II seized the throne after turning against his uncle during the Satrapal Revolt. Despite repelling a Persian invasion in 351-350 BC, he was eventually driven into exile in Ethiopia. These coins, likely minted to pay mercenaries, are notable for their uniquely Egyptian design, featuring a hieroglyph, which is the only known ancient coinage to include one.
