Vintage Russian Rarity Certified by NGC Realizes $780,000 in New York Sale

Posted on 1/30/2025

More than two dozen NGC-certified coins realized at least five figures in the January auction.

A vintage Russian medal linked to Peter the Great realized $780,000 while 30 other rarities certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) realized at least five figures in a pair of January 2025 auctions. The New York Sale's Auction 62: Russian Coins, Orders and Medals was held on January 14 and Auction 63: Ancient & World Coins was held on January 16.

Leading all lots in both auctions was a Russia (1702-dated) Gold Medal - Novodel graded NGC MS 64 and pedigreed to Hutten-Czapski (lot 4) that realized $780,000. The rarity was struck during Tsar Peter's reign during the earliest years of the Great Northern War, which lasted from 1700 to 1721. As a reward for their first victory of the war against the Swedish Empire in January 1702, the tsar awarded his military commanders gold medals like this one, which features the bust of a young Peter the Great on the obverse and the coat of arms of Russia on the reverse.
