NGC-certified French Rarity Tied to King Louis XVIII Offered in Maison Palombo Auction

More than 200 rare coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) are being offered in an upcoming Maison Palombo sale that is focused on ancient and world rarities. Online bidding is already underway for Maison Palombo's Auction 24, which will be held on April 11, 2025.

The top NGC-certified highlight of the auction is a France 1815 Gold Essai 40 Francs graded NGC PF 63 Ultra Cameo (lot 474), with a starting price of CHF25,000 (about $28,000). This rare essai (or pattern) features the bust of King Louis XVIII and bears the date of a tumultuous year in France's history. Louis ascended the throne in May 1814 but reigned for less than a year before Napoleon Bonaparte escaped from exile in Elba, leading to the Hundred Days War (from March to July 1815) that briefly interrupted Louis XVIII's reign. Louis XVIII would pass away in 1824, making him the last king of France to die a reigning monarch. It is the only gold essai of this coin that NGC has graded.
