The rays on the reverse of this proof 1866 Shield Nickel might be seen to radiate beauty but on this particular example, the rays are radiating nothing more than an odd brown color on an otherwise white proof coin.
The conservators at NCS were able to remove the unsightly browning on the surface of this coin. This particularly Shield Nickel was left with bright surfaces and steps were taken to help prevent further problems from occurring in the future. This coin was able to grade well with NGC following the conservation work.
