Improper storage can leave coins in a most unattractive state. The build up of residues from various sources not only make for an unappealing coin but could also lead to irreversible damage. Removal of particularly thick residues is essential.
This 1916 Half Dollar was recently submitted to NCS to have the buildup of some unsightly residues removed in the hopes that a beautiful coin would be revealed. Careful work was performed to remove the multiple levels of residues on this coin. The thick green residue may have been PVC but the thick brown sticky residues proved to be a greater challenge for the NCS technicians to remove. After successful removal, an aesthetically pleasing coin was revealed. This coin is now in a standard graded NGC holder.
