Modern commemorative coins can frequently be found with hazing residues that can be both unattractive and distracting. Proof quality coins can be frequently seen with the effects of poor storage and handling but mint state strike coins can also develop the dreaded haze. Just as with proof strike coins, the mint state strike versions can be adversely affected by the presence of heavy residues.

This silver 1981 South Korean 20,000 Won commemorative coin honoring the anniversary of the 5th Republic developed a detrimental haze that was both unattractive and would hold back the grade of this piece. The haze was able to be removed safely and the coin was able to grade with NGC very well with standard numeric grading. As would any modern coin dated 1970 to date and valued less than $3000, this coin qualifies for the modern special conservation rate of $22.50 per coin for both conservation and grading.
