NGC Security Image Archive Now Includes 7 Million Coins

SARASOTA, Fla. (April 29, 2013) – Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) announced that its online certification verification database includes images for more than 7 million NGC-certified coins. Accessible for free through the “Verify NGC Certification” tool on the NGC website (www.ngccoin.com) and the NGC mobile website (m.ngccoin.com), as well as the NGC Coin Details smartphone app, these images show the obverse and reverse of a coin in its NGC holder immediately after encapsulation.
Started in October 2008, this ambitious initiative involves NGC capturing and storing a digital image of nearly every coin that it certifies. These “security images” are intended to combat counterfeit and tampered holders by showing the encapsulated coin prior to its shipment from NGC. A prospective buyer can enter an NGC certification number online to access images and certification data.
“Compiling this image database was a tremendous step towards combating counterfeit and tampered holders,” says Steven R. Eichenbaum, CEO of NGC. “We believe that this database has been extremely effective and consider it to be one of the key benefits of NGC certification.”
Security images are taken as part of NGC’s normal grading process at no additional charge, and all NGC website visitors get free access to the images. Turnaround times are not affected by the imaging.
NGC is an independent member of the Certified Collectibles Group (CCG).
