NGC Grades Double Struck Proof 2008 Mandela 5 Rand

Posted on 7/14/2015

NGC graders spotted a rare double struck mint error on a modern South African coin.

NGC regularly receives both Uncirculated and Proof Mandela 5 Rand coins for grading. In fact, NGC has graded more than 210,000 Uncirculated 2008 Mandela 5 Rand coins and more than 1,000 Proof 2008 Mandela 5 Rand coins. Recently we encountered the most dramatic pair of errors that we have seen out of all those examples that we have graded.

Each of these Proof 2008 5 Rand coins were double struck in the dollar and both show clear evidence of the earlier strike. The doubling is most dramatic on the obverse of the coins. Images of the stronger of the two, which exhibits the most rotation between strikes, are shown below.

Double struck in collar mint errors are quite rare, particularly on modern pieces. This submission shows that even the most frequently seen coins can sometimes display unique and exciting characteristics.
