NGC Celebrates National Coin Week

Posted on 4/17/2016

The week of April 17-23, 2016 is National Coin Week, designated by Presidents Nixon and Reagan to celebrate coin collecting.

The United States Mint and numismatists across the country will be observing National Coin Week the week of April 17 – 23, 2016. This special week, set aside for the third week every April, aims to foster interest in coin collecting. The holiday serves as an opportunity to promote numismatics, encourage new collectors and acknowledge coins as effective educational tools.

National Coin Week was established by President Nixon in honor of the Bicentennial and the Bicentennial issue Quarter, Half Dollar and Dollar coins. President Ronald Reagan renewed the proclamation during his tenure writing:

“Since the beginning of history, coins have played an important role in the story of civilization. They reflect the economic development of their country of origin, as well as the scientific advancement and artistic values of the people who produce and use them. Today, millions of Americans collect coins for both pleasure and profit.”

President Reagan recognized the Washington Silver Half-Dollar Commemorative and the Silver Olympic Commemoratives as successful U.S. Mint programs in 1982 and 1983. Designed by Chief Engraver Elizabeth Jones, these coins were the first commemoratives issued in almost three decades.

This year marks the 33rd National Coin Week since Ronald Reagan’s proclamation in 1983. Appropriately, 2016 will also see the release of the Ronald Reagan Presidential dollar, which is scheduled to make its debut in July.
