NGC Grading McDonald's MacCoin Tokens

Posted on 8/2/2018

NGC ran a metallurgical analysis on one of the tokens celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac.

The world's newest "currency" is the MacCoin, released August 2, 2018, through the global fast food restaurant McDonald's. NGC, the world's largest third-party grading service for coins, medals and tokens, has already begun to receive MacCoins for certification.

The tokens are available at McDonald's restaurants with the purchase of a Big Mac, and can be redeemed for a Big Mac in more than 50 countries through the end of 2018. They celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac, the iconic hamburger that was introduced in the Pittsburgh area in 1967 and nationwide in 1968.

The obverse of the MacCoin shows a "50" at center with the denomination, "1 Big Mac," above it and a small McDonald's logo below it. Around the perimeter are the words "Valid Thru" in English and their equivalent in six other languages: Arabic, Indonesian, Mandarin, Portuguese, French and Spanish, along with the year, 2018.

MacCoins are being issued with five different reverse designs, one for each decade of the Big Mac.

NGC examined a MacCoin in its X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer, and determined it to be brass — or, more precisely, 70 percent copper and 30 percent zinc. The MacCoin has a diameter of 32 mm and weighs 10.9 grams, making it slightly wider and lighter than a Kennedy Half Dollar.

According to McDonalds, more than 6.2 million MacCoins will be distributed.
