The Clemy is given "in recognition of writing skill, dedication to numismatics, sense of humor and dedication to the Numismatic Literary Guild," according to the NLG. It is named after NLG founder Clement F. Bailey and has been awarded since 1968. Past winners are a Who's Who of numismatics, including Eric P. Newman, Kenneth Bressett, Donn Pearlman, Q. David Bowers and Barbara Gregory.
Lange, one of the hobby's most-familiar researchers and writers, has received numerous awards for his articles and books, and in 2017 was honored with the American Numismatic Association (ANA) Numismatist of the Year award. He has been NGC Research Director since 1994 and writes the USA Coin Album column for the NGC eNews monthly newsletter.
Lange's Clemy Award was one of four awards received by NGC and its employees at the 2018 NLG Bash on August 16, 2018, at the ANA World's Fair of Money in Philadelphia.
The NGC website, NGCcoin.com, received the 2018 Best Dealer or Industry Website Award. NGCcoin.com offers a wealth of free information to collectors and dealers including price guides, the NGC Census population report, a comprehensive counterfeit detection portal and more. It also hosts the NGC Registry, a platform where collectors can display their coins and participate in a fun and friendly competition with other collectors around the world for the best sets.
Other 2018 NLG awards for NGC employees included:
- Best Ancients Article (Sea Creatures on Greek Coins), by David Vagi, Director of NGC Ancients
- Best Numismatic History or Personalities Article (Women and Coins), by Kris Kudenholdt, NGC Content Coordinator
"I'm proud of Dave Lange and all the other members of the NGC team whose efforts were recognized by the NLG," said Mark Salzberg, chairman of NGC. "NGC and its employees work tirelessly to educate and expand the coin collecting community."
