Two gold rarities from 17th century England, both certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®), had the top prices realized in Sovereign Rarities Auction 1, held on September 25, 2018, in London.
A 1699 England Elephant & Castle Five Guinea, graded NGC MS 62, realized £186,000 (about $245,000 USD), far above its pre-auction estimate of £35,000 to £45,000. The coin’s Elephant and Castle name derives from the small design element below the bust of William III on the obverse that represents the African company that supplied the gold.
