NGC-graded Gold Rarities Featured in Heritage Coin Auctions

Posted on 4/5/2019

A US and an English coin, struck nearly 300 years apart, are among the lots generating the most interest at a pair of April sales.

Two NGC-graded gold coins are expected to realize prices in the six figures in a pair of Heritage Auctions coin sales being held in late April. Both sales are being held in the Chicago area amid the Central States Numismatic Society show.

A rare 1642 England Triple Unite, graded NGC MS 61, has an estimate from the auction house of $80,000 to $120,000. This is an example of the largest hammered gold coin ever produced in England, and it is encapsulated in an NGC Oversize Holder.

Meanwhile, in the US coins sale, a 1915-S Panama-Pacific Round $50 commemorative, graded NGC MS 65, is likely to realize six figures, based on price guide data. Five commemorative coins, including a round $50 and an octagonal $50, were issued for a world's fair held in San Francisco to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal. Mintages (based on contemporary demand) were 645 for the octagonal but only 483 for the round $50, so the more familiar round shape actually generally carries a premium today.
