NGC-certified 19th Century Russian Coin Realizes More Than $250,000

Several NGC-graded vintage European rarities achieved six-figure prices in the MDC Monaco sale.

A Russian gold coin minted in 1802 in St. Petersburg and certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) realized €234,000 (about $259,000 USD) in an auction presented by Monnaies de Collection sarl (MDC) Monaco in November 2019.

The 10 Roubles graded NGC MS 63★ has in the center of its obverse a two-headed eagle in a shield, surrounded by the coats of arms of Moscow, Kazan, Siberia and Astrakhan. It is dated near the beginning of the reign of Alexander I, who ruled from 1801 to 1825, during the Napoleonic Wars. It was the top lot of the Monaco sale.

Two other gold NGC-certified coins surpassed €100,000 (about $110,000 USD) each. They were a Netherlands 1721 Gold Ducaton graded NGC PF 63 Cameo that realized €192,000 (about $212,000 USD) and a Russia 1896 Nicolas II 25 Roubles graded NGC MS 61+ that realized €146,000 (about $175,000).
