NGC-certified Coins Highlight Heritage Long Beach Expo Sale
Posted on 5/21/2020
Gold rarities certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) are among the highlights of the Heritage Auctions Long Beach Expo US Coins Signature Auction. Online bidding is now underway for the auction, with sessions ending June 4-7, 2020.
One of the most anticipated coins in the sale is an extremely rare Specimen 1907-D Liberty Head $20, graded NGC SP 65. According to Heritage, this coin is so rare that, as of right now, there are only three known Specimen strikes. This coin is the finest certified of the three.
Very little is known about these special strikings as no official documentation has been found acknowledging that they were struck. Numismatic researchers suggest they were likely meant to commemorate the end of the Liberty Head design that had been used since the Double Eagle was introduced in 1850.
Another highlight of the sale is a 1907 High Relief Saint-Gaudens $20 graded NGC PF 67+, one of the highest-graded examples known. In 1907, the long-running Liberty Head Double Eagle design was replaced by a new one from acclaimed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This new design is generally regarded as one of the most beautiful in US coinage.
An 1895 $20 graded NGC PF 67 Ultra Cameo is also expected to draw spirited bidding. This coin is the highest-graded example of the estimated 51 Proof Liberty Double Eagles struck in 1895, with less than half that number believed to have survived.
This example is pedigreed to the renowned Ed Trompeter Collection. Trompeter was one of a very small number of people to collect gold Proofs by date during the 20th century and assembled a superb run of US gold coinage.
