The coin features Victor Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy and King of Sardinia, who ruled from 1802 to 1821. During his rule, he sought to restore order after the Sardinian revolutionary movements in 1794, a period overwrought with chaos and crime. His nationalist policies incited the Italian revolutions that eventually led to Italy’s unification in 1861.

The reverse depicts the Savoy arms’ spade-shaped shield between two laurel branches with the Collar of the Order below, to represent Sardinia’s return to order and peace. The coin is dated the same year as Victor Emmanuel's abdication in 1821.
