NGC-certified 1580 Poland Thaler Highlights Fall Künker Sales

Posted on 9/11/2020

NGC-certified vintage rarities from around the world are among the highlights of the Auktion 339 and 340 sales.

High-grade coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) are featured in the Künker Münzauktionen und Goldhandel Auktion 339 sale from September 28-29, 2020, and the Auktion 340 sale from September 30-October 1, 2020. Online bidding is now open.

One of the most prized coins of Auktion 339 is an exceedingly rare NGC-certified 1580 Polish Thaler. Graded NGC VF 30, it is estimated at € 60,000 (about $71,000 USD), the highest for any coin in this auction.

The coin features Stephen Báthory, the Prince of Transylvania, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, who ruled from 1576-1586. During his reign, he established a Polish-Lithuanian monetary unit in both parts of the Commonwealth to represent the consolidation of his kingdom as Poland and Russia vied for control of Livonia. In 1582, he defeated Ivan the Terrible, effectively ending the Livonian War.

His new minting regulations played a pivotal role in the development of the Commonwealth’s minting system and influenced all Polish Monarchy thalers from thereafter. Its significant year of issue and excellent condition distinguish it as one of the great rarities of 16th-century Polish numismatics.
