Dozens of NGC-certified Rarities Realize Over $100,000 at Heritage Sale

An early quarter and a large-denomination gold commemorative were among the highlights of the auction.

Dozens of rare US coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) realized prices over $100,000 at the FUN US Coins Signature Auction presented by Heritage Auctions January 20-24, 2021. The sale featured some of the greatest treasures of US numismatics from the unparalleled Partrick Collection.

The Partrick Collection portion of the sale included an astonishing 34 NGC-certified coins and medals that realized prices over $100,000, including a Brasher Doubloon that sold for a record $9.36 million. Learn more about these coins here.

In addition, another 15 NGC-certified coins that were not part of the Partrick Collection also realized prices over $100,000. These were led by a 1796 Quarter graded NGC MS 65 that realized $210,000. The US Mint struck a mere 6,146 examples of the inaugural quarter with the 1796 date and did not issue them again until 1804. Of the 188 in the NGC Population Report, only four are reported in higher grades than this example.

The auction featured several examples of the Panama-Pacific $50 commemorative, the largest denomination ever issued by the US Mint. They included a 1915-S Panama-Pacific Round $50 graded NGC MS 66 that realized $186,000. These commemoratives were struck in Round and Octagonal formats for the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition in San Francisco, which celebrated the Panama Canal and that city's rebirth after a devastating earthquake.
