NGC-certified Polish Coin Realizes Over $400,000 in January Sale

Vintage world coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®), including a gold rarity nearly 400 years old, achieved impressive results at a Künker auction. The prestigious numismatic firm based in Germany held the sale on January 28, 2021.

The sale's top result was a Poland 1629 Gold Sigismund III graded NGC MS 62+ that realized € 336,000 (about $408,000 USD), far exceeding its pre-sale estimate of € 75,000 (about $91,000 USD). It features the crown and monogram of King Sigismund III, who ruled from 1587 to 1632.

Another rare coin, a Germany 1711 10 Ducat graded NGC MS 61+ realized € 264,000 (about $320,000 USD), exceeding its pre-auction estimate of € 150,000 (about $184,000 USD). The coin depicts Frederick Augustus I, Elector of Saxony from 1694 to 1733, regally riding his horse. He also ruled as King of Poland from 1697 to 1706 and again from 1709 to 1733.

Other NGC-certified highlights in the sale included:

• a Germany 1698 GFN 5 Ducats graded NGC MS 63 that realized € 144,000 (about $175,000 USD), far above its pre-auction estimate of € 40,000 (about $49,000 USD)
• an Austria 1593 6 Ducats graded NGC MS 62 that realized € 90,000 (about $109,000 USD)
• a Germany 1598 8 Ducats graded NGC AU 55 that realized € 66,000 (about $80,000 USD)
• a Germany (1745-65) 3 Ducats graded NGC MS 61 that realized € 55,000 (about $67,000 USD)
• a Germany 1690 2 Ducats graded NGC MS 62 that realized € 45,000 (about $55,000 USD)
• a US 1861-S Paquet $20 graded NGC VF 35 that realized € 38,400 (about $47,000 USD)
• a Switzerland 1798 4 Ducats graded NGC MS 61 that realized € 33,600 (about $41,000 USD)
• an Argentina 1842 R 8 Escudos graded NGC XF Details that realized € 31,200 (about $38,000 USD)

These prices realized reflect a 20% buyer’s premium. In certain cases, the buyer’s premium may be higher or lower.
