NGC-certified Medal from the First Modern Olympics Stars in April Karamitsos Sale

The silver rarity was the highest prize an athlete could win at the 1896 games in Greece.

An Olympic medal rarity certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) is among the offerings in the next sale presented by the auction house A. Karamitsos, which has been in the philately trade for more than 40 years. World coins and medals certified by NGC and banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) are featured in Part A and Part B of Karamitsos' Public & Live Internet Auction 676. Online bidding is already underway for the sale, which will be held April 3-4, 2021.

The Greece 1896-Dated Silver Medal from the First Modern Olympics is graded NGC UNC Details (lot 6739) and has a starting price of €40,000 (about $48,400). The medal's obverse shows Zeus and the goddess Victory, while the reverse shows the ruins of the Acropolis in Athens.

In 1896, the Greek capital hosted the rebirth of an ancient sports competition: The Olympics. At the inaugural games, the silver medal was the top prize for athletes; these accomplishments are now considered gold-medal achievements.
