More than 20 NGC-certified Coins from Continental Europe Realize Over $250,000 in Paramount Collection Sale

Some of the greatest rarities from France, Germany and Austria soared past their estimates in the March 2021 sale.

Certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®), the Paramount Collection is one of the greatest groups of rare coins from Europe and elsewhere ever assembled. A stunning 23 Paramount Collection coins from continental Europe realized prices over $250,000 USD (over € 212,000) when they were offered by Heritage Auctions in a sale March 25-27, 2021. Most of them soared past their pre-auction estimates.

The centerpiece of the sale was a Great Britain 1937 Edward VIII Pattern Gold 5 Sovereign graded NGC PF 67 Ultra Cameo that realized a spectacular $2.28 million (about € 1.93 million), smashing the record for a British coin sold at auction. Ten other NGC-certified coins from Great Britain and two Roman Empire gold medallions certified by NGC Ancients also surpassed the $250,000 mark.

But the heart of the Paramount Collection sale was in continental Europe. These selections were led by a France 1640A 10 Louis d'Or - Early Restrike graded NGC MS 61 (lot 30162) that realized $456,000 (about € 387,000), far above its pre-auction estimate of $100,000 to $150,000 (about € 84,800 to € 127,000). It is the largest denomination ever struck in France, and the coin itself is so large that it required NGC's Oversize Holder.

Meanwhile, an Austria 1655 20 Ducat graded NGC AU 55 (lot 30111) realized $432,000 (about € 366,000), several times its pre-auction estimate of $80,000 to $120,000 (about € 67,000 to € 102,000). This extremely rare coin was struck late in the reign of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III, who died in 1657.
