Rare NGC-certified Vintage Chinese Coin Realizes $324,000 in Stack's Bowers Sale

Vintage Chinese coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) had strong results in a Stack’s Bowers sale held in Hong Kong, April 6-8, 2021. Three rare coins each bearing a dragon design and dating to the final years of the imperial era realized over $100,000 apiece.
They were led by a Chinese 1907 Gold Pattern Tael graded NGC MS 64 (lot 52136) that realized $324,000, doubling its pre-auction estimate of $100,000 to $150,000. These ambitious patterns never progressed to a circulation issue because China’s gold reserves were modest at the time. According to the NGC Census, there are only 15 NGC-certified examples, and the one that sold is the highest graded coin of its kind.

A China (1898) Chihli 50 Cents graded NGC MS 62 (lot 53030), realized an outstanding $144,000, several times its pre-auction estimate of $10,000 to $15,000. This coin is noted for the almond shape of the dragon’s eyes, and this particular example has a solid even, strike.

Meanwhile, a China 1910 Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 64 (lot 52161) also realized $144,000.

Other NGC-certified highlights in the sale included:
- a China (1914) L. Giorgi Silver Dollar graded NGC UNC Details (lot 52311) that realized $132,000
- a Korea 1906 10 Won graded NGC MS 66 and pedigreed to the Eliasberg Collection (lot 51234) that realized $72,000
- a China YR29-Dated Gold Tael Modern Restrike graded PF 66 Cameo (lot 52132) that realized $72,000
- an Iran AH1301B (1883-84) Wreath Obverse 25 Toman graded NGC UNC Details (lot 51193) that realized $52,800
- a China (1990) 15oz Gold Vault Protector Medal graded NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo (lot 51448) that realized $52,800
- a China (1928) Silver Auto Dollar graded NGC AU 50 (lot 53325) that realized $50,400
- a China (1900) Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 62 (lot 53041) that realized $49,200
Prices realized include buyer’s premium. All estimates are provided by the auction house in US dollars.
