NGC Special Designations and Labels for the 2021 American Gold Eagle Two-Coin Set
Posted on 7/29/2021
On August 5, the US Mint is releasing a two-coin set with original and new versions of the 2021-W Proof $5 Gold Eagle. The set has a product limit of only 5,000.
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) will distinguish coins from the set with a special designation, Gold Design Set, and each coin will have an attribution of Family of Eagles T-1 for the original Gold Eagle and Eagle Portrait T-2 for the new Gold Eagle. NGC is also offering the celebratory NGC Eagle 35th Anniversary Label for no additional fee. Other available NGC special labels include the West Point Mint Gold Star Label and the ever-popular NGC Early Releases and First Releases Labels.
Each set will be accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity (COA), with a limited quantity signed by Director of the Mint. NGC will add the COA number to the NGC label by request for an additional fee. NGC can also encapsulate the COA in a special, tamper-evident holder, also by request for an additional fee.

The obverses of both coins feature Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic Liberty; however, exciting differences are found in the details. With the use of modern technology, numerous aspects of the new version were modified so that the image more closely reflects the original cast design.
The reverse of the original Gold Eagle depicts a male eagle with an olive branch in its talons, flying over a nest with a female eagle and eaglets — a familiar image since 1986, when the first American Gold Eagles were issued. This classic design was created by sculptor Miley Busiek Frost.
The new reverse features a striking portrait of an eagle by artist Jennie Norris and will continue the legacy of the Gold Eagle. Norris signs certification labels exclusively for NGC, which are available through select retailers.
NGC is the industry leader in the certification of American Eagles, with more than 1.6 million Gold Eagles graded since 1987 — far exceeding any other third-party grading service. To learn more about NGC’s certification options for all of the 2021 American Eagles, click here.
