NGC Registry Featured Set: Canada Silver Maple Leaf Set

Posted on 7/13/2021

This month’s featured set belongs to Charlie 63.

After celebrating two iconic US coins last month, we hop across our northern border to visit our Canadian neighbors and give their favorite national symbol, the Canadian Maple Leaf, its due recognition. We are delighted to feature a Silver Maple Leaf NGC Registry Set by Charlie 63.

The story of Canadian bullion coinage is an interesting one. In 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint issued the world’s first 99.99% Gold bullion coin. Six years later, in 1988, they introduced a 99.99% pure Silver Maple Leaf and a 99.95% pure Platinum Maple Leaf. Years later, since the previous issues were a hit, a Palladium Maple Leaf and a 99.999% pure Gold Maple Leaf followed.

All issues of this unique bullion coinage can be found in the NGC Registry and have their own subcategory. The Silver issues stand out as the most popular Canadian bullion type in the NGC Registry, with an impressive 746 collector sets thus far.

Charlie 63’s Mint State Silver $5 set is quite comprehensive, as this set category spans over 30 years and is still growing. Charlie 63 is the only collector at this point who can boast an impressive 93% completion! He began building his set in early 2015 and has been slowly and steadily rising in the ranks. Out of 223 participants in this set category, Charlie has risen to a commendable fourth place. He has posted images for the majority of his coins; be sure to check out his gallery for a lovely pictorial walk through the evolution of this popular Silver Maple Leaf series.

Thank you for sharing your impressive Maple Leaf collection, Charlie 63! We are excited to see what updates you will present to us next!

Get your sets ready for the 2021 NGC Registry Awards. The NGC Registry is a free online platform where collectors register and display their certified coins and can compete against other collectors around the world for recognition and prizes. This popular resource now boasts over 24,000 users, 213,000+ registered sets and over 1.3 million registered coins. In January of 2021, the NGC Registry awarded more than $25,000 in prizes.

Would you like your set to be chosen for a future article? 100% completion in a set is not always feasible. Perhaps, we will choose someone whose set has a personal story behind it or some interesting historical facts. We are looking for those sets where someone has taken the time to make the set unique and a reflection of his/her personal collecting style. It may be your set! Stay tuned.
