NGC-certified Vintage Italian Coin Realizes Over $190,000 in October Sale

NGC-certified coins dominated the Editions V. Gadoury auction, with eight of them realizing six figures.

A spectacular Italian gold coin certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) realized €169,200 (about $197,000 USD), taking the top spot in a sale presented by Editions V. Gadoury Monaco. Several other exemplary NGC-certified coins boasted amazing results in the sale, held October 23, 2021.

The Italy 1927R 100 Lire graded NGC MS 63+ (lot 1734), features King Victor Emmanuel III, who ruled the kingdom of Italy from 1900 to 1946. Representing the agriculture of Italy, the reverse displays an aratrice, or plowwoman, tilling the soil for planting.

Another coin exceeding six figures was a Russia 1836 Imperial Family 1.5 Roubles graded NGC MS 65 (lot 1897). The coin’s obverse features Emperor Nicholas I, who ruled Russia from 1825 to 1855, with the reverse displaying the portrait of his wife, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, and their seven children. Only 150 such coins were produced, and this example realized €168,000 (about $195,000 USD).

Meanwhile, an England 1681 5 Guineas graded NGC MS 62+ (lot 994) realized €144,000 (about $167,000 USD). England’s guinea denomination was created during the reign of King Charles II (1630-1685), whose portrait is displayed on the obverse. The name “guinea” was derived from the region in West Africa, where the gold came from.

Other NGC-certified highlights in the sale included:

  • a Roman Empire, Macrinus (A.D. 217-218) Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients MS★, 5/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface with Fine Style (lot 143) that realized €132,000 (about $153,000 USD)
  • an Italy 1910R Gold 20 Lire graded NGC MS 62 (lot 1764) that realized €121,200 (about $141,000 USD)
  • a Ptolemaic Kingdom Berenice II (d. 221 B.C.) under Ptolemy III (246-222 B.C.) Gold Octodrachm graded NGC Ancients Ch AU★, 5/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface with Fine Style (lot 43) that realized €108,000 (about $126,000 USD)
  • an Italy 1927R 50 Lire graded NGC MS 66 (lot 1733) that realized $102,000 (about $119,000 USD)
  • an Italy (1735-41) ZF Venice Alvise Pisani Gold Ducato graded NGC MS 61 (lot 1528) that realized €108,000 (about $126,000 USD)
  • a group of three Italy 1940 20 Lire, 10 Lire and 5 Lire coins graded NGC MS 65+, NGC MS 66 and NGC MS 64 (lot 1753) that realized €84,000 (about $98,000 USD)
