NGC Designations and Labels for 2022 Negro Leagues Coins
Posted on 1/5/2022
The US Mint is releasing commemorative coins and a medal as a tribute to the players and coaches that created the Negro Leagues. Born out of adversity, the Negro Leagues grew to attain a respected legacy within America’s favorite pastime: baseball. The coins will be available for preorder starting January 6 and are expected to ship in April 2022. Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) is celebrating the Negro Leagues Baseball Commemorative Coins by offering special designations and labels.

Since 1991, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum has preserved the history of African American baseball. Located in Missouri, just two blocks from where the league was established, the museum is devoted to retelling the unsung stories of their stars. Surcharges from each coin sold by the US Mint will benefit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum for education, outreach programs and exhibits.
The Negro Leagues Baseball Commemorative Coins include an Uncirculated Clad Half Dollar struck in Denver, a Proof Clad Half Dollar struck in San Francisco, an Uncirculated Silver Dollar and a Proof Silver Dollar, both struck in Philadelphia, and an Uncirculated Gold $5 and a Proof Gold $5, both struck at the West Point Mint.
All of the coins are being sold individually, and the Proof coins are also being offered as a three-coin set. Coins from the Proof Set are eligible for a special set designation: Negro Leagues Proof Set.
The clad half dollars show a batter with a keen focus, ready for the pitch as well as a depiction of an official tour bus, which was designed by Coin and Medal Designer Chris Costello. The reverse displays five Negro League players, a tribute to all those who made an impact on the League.
The silver dollars depict a pitcher encompassed with baseball stitching. The reverse, designed by Don Everhart, continues the scene as the ball reaches the batter. Additionally, the Mint is releasing a silver dollar with a baseball diamond privy mark that has a limited mintage of just 20,000 coins.
The founder of the Negro National League, Andrew “Rube” Foster, is prominently featured on the Gold $5 coins. A successful manager, Foster established the league in 1920 and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981. The reverse, which was designed by Donna Weaver, displays tipping of a cap as a tribute to the league with an inscription “THEIR LEGACY PLAYS ON”.
The Mint is also releasing a set that contains a Proof Silver Dollar and Jackie Robinson Silver Medal, paying homage to the man who first broke the color barrier in baseball. The set is eligible for the special designation: Official US Coin & Medal Set.
