Peter Anthony: The 1994 10 Yuan 1/10 oz. platinum Panda is the third of the six 10 Yuan platinum Pandas that the China Mint released between 1990 and 1997. Like the other small Pandas many of these coins fell into the hands of the jewelry industry. As a result it’s quite common to find them impaired. With an original mintage of 2,500 there weren’t that many to begin with.
One interesting note; these coins were reportedly struck by the Perth Mint in Australia. They are sometimes found sealed but it’s not certain if they were sealed by Perth, or by a later distributor. In any case, the pouches look nothing like those from any Chinese mint. The Perth Mint did a nice job with these and most graded examples are PF-69.
The 1994 10 Yuan platinum Panda is part of the NGC Registry set, “Platinum 1/10 Ounce Panda, 1990-1997, Mint State and Proof.”
