Peter Anthony: The 1992 5 oz. gold 500 Yuan gold Panda is the first coin of this denomination released since 1988, a four-year gap in the 5 oz. gold Panda series. The official mintage is just 99, but just like the 1992 Panda proof sets that have actual mintages that are less than half the announced total, this coin has a mintage well below its announced mintage, too. It is a very scarce coin and is one of the key dates in its series.
Like the other 5 oz. gold Pandas, this coin sports a unique design not seen on any other denomination. It features a mother Panda with a cub along the banks of a stream, or river. The 1992 5 oz. gold Pandas were well-struck and usually grade well. A common flaw on many, if not most, coins is red spots. This is a problem that NCS should be consulted about. Also, if the coin has been mishandled the large open fields of the obverse Temple of Heaven face will show it as will the high points of both faces of the coin.
